:)
Charlotte's Web would be one that I can think of that has a sad ending.
I'm hopeful that others will come along to address your question.
Thanks!
Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy
Its one of my type 5 books - I just love it.
The Stranger
Ulysses by James Joyce
The Road
Blood Meridian
After many a summer dies the swan
Jeremy
Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck
Where the Red Fern Grows - Wilson Rawls
Gone with the Wind - Margaret Mitchell (note: some people don't think the ending of that was sad, but I personally do)
Dr. Faustus - Christopher Marlowe
I don't know if it counts, but any of Shakespeare's tragedies have REALLY unhappy endings.
Tuesdays with Morrie - Mitch Ablom
1984 - George Orwell. This one isn't sad as IN "boohoo"--it's more that it's sad because of its commentary on the state of the world.
I'm trying to think of the books that had me crying my eyes out at the end--and I know I've read literally dozens of them. However, until I can scan over my book list at home (I'm still at work), I won't be able to add to this list.
A Fine Balance - Rohinton Mistry - The whole book is sad and the ending is worse... It's a really good read.
Thanks a lot to everyone! Ill take note of it. :)
I think The Notebook is sad. It's romantic and sweet, and all, but oh, so sad.
"Love Story" is a classic. "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden." A movie is currently in process for that one.
The memory keepers daughter by kim edwards, Give it a read , its amazing :)

Jodi picoult's my sisters keeper has a sad ending at least it did to me
Ah. Yea. I read that one already :)
The Last Time We Met - Anita Shreve
Plain Truth - Jodi Picoult

You've gotten lots of great answers, but here's a few more:
The Outsiders
Old Yeller
Of Mice and Men
I know... haha.
Now I don't know which one to choose. :))
