Dear Sir/Madam:

Please let me know if there is a way to overcome WIN XP Professional log in error. I am interested in the recovering files from old user "Name..." account located on the partition "C"

Problem description:

At the attempt to login to the user account the message is shown: "domain either does not exist or could not be contacted"

Chain of events:

1. WIN XP Professional is installed on the partition "C". The system became dysfunctional after TV Tune card and drivers were installed.

There were several attempts made to repair system using WIN XP Pro CD. The last two were repair installations of the XP on the drive C.

In the attempt to login in the "SAFE MODE" two user accounts are shown: "Administrator" and "Name..." user account. When logging to any of them the same error message appears: "domain either does not exist or could not be contacted".

When logging in the normal mode only one account is shown "Name...". Error message is the same.

2. WIN XP Professional is installed on the partition "D". This system works fine, including TV tuner card and all installed programs. Partition "C" could be viewed through Windows explorer, but user "Name..." account files are not accessible.

Reset the password for the both the user with the help of HIREN BOOT CD there is utility to reset the SAM records.

Is this system a part of domain? If so, Do you know the password of LOCAL ADMINISTRATOR? Then follow these steps.

Press "Alt=CTRL+DEL" two times so that you will get a window where you can type user name and password. So, type local admin user name, and passwrd, then select lo gin to "Local Computer". If you enter the correct user name and password, you will be able to login to system. After loged in, join to domain again, so that you will be able to login with domain user name, and access user's data.

OR,

Boot second (D) windows and login as administrator.Then, you take ownership of the files and folder you want to access from C Drive.
To take ownership of a folder,
Right click on the folder, properties---> Security Tab----> Advanced----> Owner----> Select administrators-----> replace owner on subcontainer and objects

Thank you for your response.

1.I have to notice that the system (computer) is not a part of the domain, but just a computer connected to the LAN. I do now the password because I have used it for years, but it does not work for the system on the partition "C" anymore. (the error message is "domain either does not exist or could not be contacted"). Since I am unable to load to the system on the partition "C" I can not do anything with Ctr-Alt-Del combination.

2. There are no "Security Tab" when right clicking on the Folder ----> Properties.
I can see necessary folder on the partition "C" when loaded from the partition "D", but I can see only 3 tabs on this folder via XP Professional (General // Sharing // Customize). The "Security tub" does exist in the Windows Vista on another computer, but not in the XP pro.

Should I, may be, go to the system "D" administrator account via "Safe Mode"?

Do you have any other ideas?

I can also do clean XP Pro installation to the partition "C" (without formatting). Will I be able to access user account folder then, or it will be deleted.
