    Shower diverter
I need some help. I recently bought a new home and have discovered a plumbing problem that I do not know how to solve. When I run water in my bathtub water comes from the main faucet and the shower head. The diverter seems to be open but maybe it is not open all the way? How can I remedy this issue?

The problem is with you diverter,There are basically two kinds of tub spouts with diverters... the threaded kind and the slip on kind (see pictures below). The slip on type spout is missing the diverter in this picture but presents the idea for you to see it.

For the slip on kind you would find a small slot on the underside of the spout. To remove a slip on spout loosen the Allen Head Set Screw pull and twist the old one off and replace it with a new one. Use a little silicone GREASE to lubricate the new Oring just prior to installation so the new Oring doesn't bind and break.

For the threaded kind you would need to unscrew the spout counterclockwise and remove the spout. Then off to home depot or lows for an exact replacement. You should also purchase a little Teflon tape or some pipe dope to apply to the threads of the pipe just before screwing new spout on.

It should be that easy... there are a few kinds out there so just bring the old one with you to find best replacement. A universal fit will work best! Good Luck.

A plumbing problem that we can't seem to get a grip on: When we turn the shower knob, the water still runs out of the tub spout. The water in my shower comes out mostly from the tub faucet and not the shower faucet (which I assume is a problem with the diverter) but what I don't understand is that the water pouring out of the tub end is scalding hot, while the water coming out of the shower end is only warm. Then they both...
