    Shower diverter
I need some help. I recently bought a new home and have discovered a plumbing problem that I do not know how to solve. When I run water in my bathtub water comes from the main faucet and the shower head. The diverter seems to be open but maybe it is not open all the way? How can I remedy this issue?

The problem is with you diverter,There are basically two kinds of tub spouts with diverters... the threaded kind and the slip on kind (see pictures below). The slip on type spout is missing the diverter in this picture but presents the idea for you to see it.

For the slip on kind you would find a small slot on the underside of the spout. To remove a slip on spout loosen the Allen Head Set Screw pull and twist the old one off and replace it with a new one. Use a little silicone GREASE to lubricate the new Oring just prior to installation so the new Oring doesn't bind and break.

For the threaded kind you would need to unscrew the spout counterclockwise and remove the spout. Then off to home depot or lows for an exact replacement. You should also purchase a little Teflon tape or some pipe dope to apply to the threads of the pipe just before screwing new spout on.

It should be that easy... there are a few kinds out there so just bring the old one with you to find best replacement. A universal fit will work best! Good Luck.
