After Toilet tank repair -- LOUD bang on opening shut-off valve
    Hi,
My toilet tank has been overflowing recently and I discovered 2 problems. The overflow pipe is too tall for the tank, but I'll leave that problem for later. On an intermittent basis the float cup appears to get stuck allowing the tank to over fill and spill over. I turned off the shut-off valve, and drained the tank using just the flapper opening, so there was still a small amount of water sitting in the bottom of the tank that I didn't bother to remove. Next, I adjusted the water-level-float-adjustment clip hoping that the intake to the tank would automatically shut off at a lower tank-fill level. GREAT! Now I wanted to test my adjustment, so I tried to open the shut-off valve. WOW! I got a shocking amount of loud bangs. I have tried 3 times to open that valve but each time I have to quickly shut it off again before the pipes get damaged. It's frighteningly loud. Will this damage the plumbing pipes in my house? What did I do wrong in trying to fix my toilet tank? What do I do now.

Once I get this fixed, I still have to do something about the useless (too tall) overflow pipe. I guess I'll have to replace it with a shorter pipe. Is this hard to do?

    Thanks for you help!

Shut the water off to the kouse at thehouse shut off and open up the angle stop, (see image) by unscrewing the bonnet packing nut and back the stem and washer assembly out counterclockwise. Seat the washer in firmly and place a pan over the open end while someone turns the water back on for a five count. Now reassemble and open the stop fully.

Yes! To replace itv you will have to pull the tank and replace the entire flush valve assembly. A better way would be to simply cut it back to a inch or so under the flood rim of the tank.
    Good luck, Tom

After I flush the toilet and the water went down the drain, a few moments later I hear a loud banging noise from the basement. I did some reading and it is suggested that I may have a water hammer.
