Root Canal gone bad
I had a root canal about a year ago, the thing is I still feel pain and the tooth is very sensitive to the touch which confuses me as my endontist/dentist extracted the root. I have gone to him to explain he looked at it and took x-rays but he could find nothing wrong he said I must just give it time. Well it has been a few months since I saw him last and it has worsend it is very painfull and when I floss that tooth it smells like it is infected and it is making me nauses and my jaw hurts. I am going to see him soon but he gets very defensive of his work and unfortunatlly since I live in key west he is the only one to take my insurance. So can anyone give me tips on what might be wrong and how to tell him without offending him! I don't want to piss of the person who is going to work in my mouth.
Thank you in advance.

Edodontists can sometimes go through the tooth wall while doing root canal and that means infection in the bone under the tooth. If that has happened, he may not be to blame, not knowing it has been done, but would explain your painful mouth. The iinfection in the bone, if that what it is, should have shown up in the x ray, but maybe not, I don't know for sure if that would be the case.
If this has happened, they can go back in and repair the damage but I believe the procedure is very expensive.

Well I went to the dentist as I said I would as usual he was rude, I explained what was going on and he just looked at my mouth and said he could see nothing wrong and without novacaine he drilled on the tooth that had the root canal and which I told him was very sensitive, he said that he was adjusting my bite, it was very painfull then he took an x-ray and said there was nothing wrong except for a mass of some kind forming at the base of the tooth inside the gym bone area, he said it was probebly nothing and that I must just take some antibiotics and a anti bacterial rinse. He would not take of the crown to see inside because he did not want to mess with his work. What do I do it is sore, sensitive and painfull and smelly and he is not helping should I just get the tooth taken out! Please help. Thank you in advance.

greenclover, I can't diagnose and make a decision for you. It sounds like he knows what is going on and the mass he sees in the x-ray is probably the infection at the bottom of the tooth. His suggestion of taking the antibiotics is correct and the rinse as well. You must keep your mouth well lubricated and clean. Wait and see after you have taken the antibiotics.
At this point I believe it would not do any good to take off the crown and that is very difficult to do and would probably put you in more pain then you already are.
You have already paid an enormous amount for the root canal and the crown so take a wait and see attitude. I know from the reading I have done on this issue that the infection in the bone under the tooth can be controlled; you may have to go to another endodontist to get it under control though.
Good luck and keep us posted!

greenclover, he is taking the only stance he can because he probably knows the complete cause of your pain is too much overwork on that tooth.

Sounds like a periodontal issue to me... can't tell for sure... in the meantime, floss deep, brush, and rinse with that stuff he gave you (probly chlorhexidine) and maybe he can clean the debris out from under the gums

Infection is not "probably nothing". I'd suggest you go see another dentist for a second opinion.

Go to another dentist, I have just had a bad root canal removed [after over 30 yrs. Nagging tooth, two fillings then root canal] ] and now am facing surgery to remove the remaining bottom of the tooth. Don't fool around with the infection.

Hi berk, you should start a new thread for your question, that way you will get better coverage and feedback.

I had a tooth root canaled that had had two fillings over a 40 yr. period, then it went to a root canal.. that was over 10 yrs. Ago. It has been a nagging kind of tooth for many years, dentists said nothing wrong, even the crown was removed at one point "no infection", replaced it. Last week major pain. Ended up it was fractured and infected. Crown & post removed, cleaned out. Now am facing oral surgery for removal of remainder of tooth just at gum line. I have now gone online and found info on the surgery for that, which was my question. I like to know what is coming and not be in the dark. I think I can live through it. Thanks. : - )

Berkeley,
It all depends on the condition of the tooth. If it is badly decayed under the crown the tooth could crumble, if the root is cracked it will need to be removed in pieces. I'm sure all you will need is some Tylenol after for discomfort.

Flossie, thank you for that advice. I am going next tues. to have the rest of the tooth pulled, the crown and post have been ground out by a specialist. I had lots of Novacaine and it went well as long as I had a good grip on the chair arms. The tooth was fractured and infected. No more pain !

I have a root canaled tooth, #11, that is bothering me. I have had it for over 6 years. I got it xrayed and it showed that the post had fractured the tooth above the gumline. I was not given a choice of options on this, only to extract it. I don't want to do this. I know it can be saved somehow....
