Anything is possible. The tonage is one thing but the CFM required is another.

What is the actual CFM required for the coil per manufacturer spec?
What is the actual CFM output for the air handler/furnace?

This is the true way to tell.

Many 4 ton coils are setup on a 3 and 1/2 ton blower assembly. It does not move a large volume of air but it works well to help dehumidify the air much quicker and the system is less noisy. I have this set up on my main unit here. But I only feed the 4 ton coil with a 3 ton outside unit.

I chose to use a 4 ton coil because it has a larger wet surface area and with the use of a expansion valve will increase efficiency and also allow more moisture removal. You can be comfortable at a higher indoor temperature is less humidity is in the air. This in turn saves energy. My system was designed 30 years ago and still runs perfectly today. The condenser was a experimental Bryant/Carrier unit that has a rating of 9 SEER which was unheard of 30 years ago. I also have two 1 ton units on two ton coils doing other parts of the house. They also work well
