I have a PC that came loaded with a Program that I like called NTI CD / DVD Maker 7.

I am replacing it with a new PC and would like to "transfer" the program. I do not have an "Install CD" as it came pre-loaded.

I went into the Program Files folder and burned the entire program onto a CD to try and transfer it, but all I have is a bunch of files on the CD.

There is no SetUP.exe file. There is a file called NTICDMaker.exe, but it gave me an error when I tried to run it.

When I burned the CD copy of the program, there was an option to make it a "Bootable" CD, but I did not select that. I don't know if that has anything to do with this.

Is the missing SetUp.exe file the problem? If so is there a way to get it?

Is there a way to "transfer a program from one PC to another, without the original SetUp CD?

You need the install files.

When a program is installed in your PC, not only does it create a folder for the main files.. it also can put files elsewhere in your PC (like WINDOWS/System32) and it makes registry entries, and it registers DLL's with windows. Basically that's how windows knows what to do.

YOu need to get the install. Do you have the CD that came with your old PC. It will be something like a repair cd, or Files on your PC... etc. ALSO, look on your old PC for a drive partition... (like D:\) some companies put all the installs in a partition.

OEM Preloaded software is licensed for the original PC only. The ONLY reliable way to install most Windows programs on a PC is with an install disk.

Programs install themselves not only into their own folder, but frequently put system files in the Windows folders somewhere and make an unknown number of entries to the registry. Copying from one computer to another is simply not possible in most instances.

Your only out is to considering purchasing an upgrade to the latest version for your current computer. That usually comes in the form of a download, which can then be installed on a separate computer instead. This is exactly how I moved my video editing software from the laptop it came on originally to another desktop.

SaticFX: I do have the Recovery CD's and the HD has a D partition (only 260MB). So How do I find and get the Install off these? How would I identify this particular "install"?

JB: Unfortunately, I seem to have the latest version of this program, so no update CD available.

The Recovery CD will probably not help. Generally a Recovery CD contains an image of the hard drive, not the installation programs.

There is hope though. Assuming your new machine has Vista you can get a File Transfer cable that will enable you to transfer programs from your old PC to the new one. Belkin makes such a cable.

Not for a preinstalled product. What you can try to do is contact NTI and explain that you got their software with an older PC and that you want to MOVE (emphasis move) it to a new PC. They may send you a key to download it or a CD for a nominal fee.

I would insert the recovery cd in the new PC with windows running, and check if there is an option to install the software without recovering the whole system.

YOu can just try to copy the whole folder for that program from the program files then transfer it to the other computer and put it also on the program files folder and look for the shortcut icon there and create one to be put on your desktop...

You can try a free program transfer tool PickMeApp. www.pickmeapp.com.

Download and unzip it to usb flash chip.

Run PickMeApp from a flash memory, PickMeApp will list applications that it can transfer in the program main window.

Hope it will help.

Just curious, have you had personal experience with this app? It looks very interesting.

Yes. It is still in Beta but it significantly improved from the first published version to current one.

Less glitches, more applications that are captured correct. Not a sysadmin tool yet, but a useful toy for a user.

Update on MY experience:

Went to webstite. Emailed them a question about MS product transfers. Wouldn't take the human interface code.

Downloaded to flash drive. Opened program. Couln't get it to work. "Help" instructions did not match screen.

The list of programs in the left pane that were available for transfer was VERY limited.

Then couldn't delete it from flash drive. Had to format flash drive.

Still stuck with setup file on my desktop. Can't delete.

Fortunately, I'm about to do a HD format, so that should clear it out. I would be reluctant to use this again.

Arpad, if you have any suggestions on how to use this properly, would appreciate your feedback. Sounds like a cool program if works.

Removing PMA should not be a problem. Something glitchy in your file system I think - never had any problems with cleaning it after use from any place. Also folders with captured programs are quite independent from the main application.

So lets go step by step - you downloaded installer, run it, put the PickMeApp_version-number folder on your flash drive and run executable from the folder -right?

I checked - yes they somehow linked wrong version of help file to the latest release

I always use the latest one on their site

Alternate way of using PMA - run it from your hard drive and when opening new "profile" - give it folder on the hard drive

They won't be able to move all your applications, unfortunately. AFAIK the software works only with programs that use Microsoft Installer now.

So it can be help, but not a total solution.

By alternate way of using I meant that you can capture into folder on your hard drive then transfer the folder to another computer (on flash drive/cd/whatever) and run another entity of PMA there to install the applications.

From my flash drive it works OK though.

Thanks for the tips. I hope I can get this working. It really sounds useful.

I have 3 questions for you which I was trying to ask PMA, but couldn't.

1) Does this extract and move the install application for the program to be moved so it can be normally installed on another PC? Or must it be run Through PMA?

2) They claim to be able to move MS Office. Are there any issues with (OEM versions of) Office not recognizing the BIOS on PC#2? I thought that Office and Windows must match up to the motherboard to operate properly.

3) Are there any issues with MS auto-updates after moving program?
