I have been living in this property for a few months, the utility company came over to read the gas meter and to our surprise it was nowhere to be found, I just realized that the gas meter is inside the wall. I would like for someone to tell me if there is a device that can help me locate the gas meter, without me causing much damage as far as breaking walls. I am going to start by tracing the gas line that is hooked up to my furnace and then cut out holes from there on, but if anyone has any other suggestions that would like to share I would really appreciated.

Yes the gas meter can be and is usually located outside. However, that can be quite expensive. Talk to the gas company. They have (or should have) devices that are attached to the meter that enable the meter reader to read the meter from his truck.
I have a piece of rental property that has the gas meter inside the basement. When the house was vacant for several months and the meter reader couldn't catch me there, he promptly install the device.

I believe that I was misunderstood, the gas company needs to inspect the gas meter but the meter is nowhere to be found it is not visible their records show that it is in front of the property however the basement has been remodeled and I believer that the owner has cover the meter with drywall.

The utility company should be able to locate the lines for you. The equipment is quite expensive. They have devices that can easily locate where the line goes.

What you could get is a boroscope which allows you to look in walls with a long fiber optic. I think prices start at about $300 and up depending on length.

Meter reading can be done just by riding down the street or a remote display.

I have never heard of concealed gas meter. Gas company has to read gas meter every month or two. Also, gas meter has regulator that has to "breathe" .

If it is "...in the wall..." than it will be inside a gas meter closet accessible through outside wall, have large access door with air vents on top and bottom. This door would be hard to overlook.

It is either in the crawl space under your house or in a well at the curb. Or, it may be hidden in untrimmed bushes. If you call Gas Co. they will tell you right away where it is.

I am lost here isn't it the gas company responsibility to know where the gas meters are?

Yes, Gas Co. owns the meter, services the meter and reads the meter. They know exactly where it is... One phone call should solve this "mystery"

Hi all...

Gas company is responsible for knowing where the meter is if installed outside the home.

If installed inside the home and someone remodels the home and covers the meter up (no door) then they certainly aren't responsible for that.

Kasper, follow largest gas pipe into the wall and then make a hole there and peek in. Patch hole using a spring-loaded access panel sold at home depot for now.

May also be a good idea to see if a neighbor will let you into their basement so you can see where it is there... may be similar to your set-up... maybe?

I have known in a few cases where they are in the basement and the service people have to have access to the basement to read the meter. But yes, in fact if someone did cover it up, this is in so many violations of building codes and safety rules.
