For cycle length, start with first day of period as "one"... end at the day before the next period starts as the day it starts begins the counting of the next cycle. Many people will count the start day of the next period as the last day of the previous cycle, but actually the day before would be the last day of that cycle, then the counting starts over again (confused yet?! ).
When you have irregular cycles it does get trickier to figure out when you might be ovulating but as a general guide, look at the shortest cycle you tend to have and subtract 18 days and then with the longest cycle subtract 11 days. Roughly 12 -16 days before the next period is due is when ovulation will often occur, but it is wise to add on several days before that, and a few after to increase the odds.
Going with the 41 days and the 47 days... you MAY ovulate somewhere in the first two weeks of September. Keep in mind, this is only going with the averages... you may actually ovulate sooner or later than this so, if possible, you may want to try and have sex every other day or every other third day during the next couple of weeks, than engage in several more sessions when you get close to and through those two weeks.

With having such irregular periods I would invest in an ovulation test. Some can be pricey but totally worth it. Most test come with 7 sticks. They are just like a pregnancy test you just pee on it and wait for the result. I ended up using the digital ones that give you a smiley face when your ovulating. I agree with DoulaLC in her calculations, but if you are really ready to start planning your conception (or trying) I would buy the ovulation tests. I had irregular periods and they really helped me figure out when was the best days to try. Although don't be disappointed if they don't work the first time, I had to buy them three months in a row before we got pregnant. So, with the right calculations and little help from technology you have a better chance. Good luck!
