What does it mean when I am trying to open a PDF and I receive a message that Adobe is has encountered a problem and has to close down. I hit okay, then I receive an error message that says the memory cannot be read.

It means that the Acrobat Reader crashed. It could be due to a corrupted PDF or to a corrupted reader. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the Acrobat reader.
