Can I sue a paper for libel if they print a lie about me
In short I work for a large government facility and I designed a system that would stop thefts of government owned property I ran it by my superiors and was given a go-ahead to implement the system. It worked so well local and national newspapers picked up the story and I given credit for the idea, untold to me another worker went to a separate newspaper after all the other articles ran and was quoted by them as saying that he told me about the idea and that me not him was given credit for it "unquote" Not only is this a bald-faced lie which I can support on many levels, but more importantly, this newspaper never got a hold of me to question me on this claim or of the veracity of his statement they just printed a lie and destroyed my credibility ARE THEY LIBEL FOR THIS!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In response to JUDYKAYTEE she states how was I damaged by the lie, libel is all about damages----------------------------------------------------------Well I think that defamation is clear((((In the most general terms, defamation is the issuance of a false statement about another person, which causes that person to suffer harm. Defamation can come in either the form of libel (written defamation) or slander (oral defamation). To succeed in a case for defamation, you have to prove four elements: 1) a false or defamatory statement was made against you; 2) the statement was made to a third party (anyone other than you, either verbally or in written form); 3) if the defamation was of public concern, then the publisher of the defamation had to be negligent; and 4) you suffered damage, such as an injury to your reputation or, in some cases, mental anguish.))))) I believe I can prove all 4 elements so is this an issue where I can sue the paper for libel/defation??

    I say YES.

Contact an attorney, and present your case, and see what they have to say.

How were you damaged by the "lie." Libel/slander are all about actual damages.

Can you prove it was your idea if it comes down to that.

I don't believe that you have a case against the paper, as they were acting in good faith.
I believe that you may well have a case against your "colleague", but as for deformation/libel, difficult to tell.
If the statement the paper published is simply a quote from this worker attempting to take credit then NO.

I don't see were you were damaged. I would contact your attorney. If anybody should be held for libal it should be the person interveiwed.
