New Evap Coil for Carrier - refrigerant and price
I have a 12-year-old Carrier Heat pump. The AC repairman, who was in fixing the control board which had been knocked out by a lightning strike, mentioned that the coil had a lot of rust on it and would soon start developing small leaks. He also mentioned that the refrigerant it used would be phased out next year. The estimated cost of replacement including labor was $1,900. I had a couple of questions:

1 - If I replace the coil, would it use the new refrigerant or the one about to be phased out?

2 - Is $1,900 a reasonable amount for the job? I'm in central NC (Raleigh).

Thanks in advance for your help!

You must live in a high price area. The coil costs no more than 300.00 so you are paying 1,300.00 labor for a 4 hour job.

I would not replace the coil at this time. Copper does not rust to start with and all the refrigerant is in the copper coils. What you have is rust on the sheet metal attached to the coil. The drain pan is also made of metal.

Let it run and save up your money for a complete new system.
