    Joint child custody
My 13 month old son''s father is in the United States Airforce and has received orders to move to Alaska. He is now suing me for Joint Custody of our son. He wants our son to stay overnight with him and weekends without me before he leaves. The only issue I have is I am still nursing him at night. Another issue he has is that he wants our son to spend an exteded amount of time with him in Alaska. He has ased for 2 to 3 months of visitation with him in the summer. I cannot let my son go for that long without me right now. My son will not understand and will think I have abandoned him. His father was not there that much throughout his first year and our son has really just gotten used to him.I think 6 weeks of visitation in the summer when he is older is more suitable. Right now he is just too young. He was not there for main key moments in my son''s life, including surgery when he was 7 months old. He believes he is capable of taking care of our son overnight and in Alaska, but I do not.

Tell him to take you to court for visitations and then explain your concerns to the Judge.
At his young age I don't see a Judge ordering him to go to another state for a couple months.
If he is granted visits before he leaves you can use a breast pump for milk.

At this age, maybe not, but again, maybe so, it is his child also But do expect him to win this for the child when the child is older so if he does not get it now, most likely he will win but they will make it at 4 or 5.
But I have seen children over 1 year old be awarded to the father for the summer. So a lot will depend on your judges views on this.

He will get weekend and over night visits since the child is over one, so I would expect that to be awarded if he goes to court.

I tried sending my daughter from Texas to Pa when she was a baby so I could drive to Pa without her and the airlines all said no way. So even if he were granted summer visits in Alaska he would have to have to be able to come get the baby and bring him back or something. Bring up in court how does he plan on getting him and bringing him back from Alaska.

If you get joint custody the one who gets visitations would have to pay child support
Most common visitation I hear given is [father] every other weekend and alternate holidays and a summer vacation.
Primary custody has to discuss decisions such as school, doctors and other important issues over with you and include you.
In your case, being in the Air Force in another state, I have no idea.
