    Theft under 5000
Hi, I got caught today at The Bay, the stuff was about 75 dollars. They called the police, then now I need to go to court next week. Its my first time and I am 19. Should I find a lawyer? Will I have record?

You may not need a lawyer as they may offer you the diversion program since it was a first offence, go to the first court date and see what happens. If they do not agree to diversion then you still have time to get a lawyer before your next court date.

But how should this person plead? Will that matter when being considered for a diversion program.

Go to court. They will most likely tell you take the diversions class and give you a summary fine (approx $300. Usually) you can fill out an income statement and make payments.
When the classes are completed you go back and let the court know.
You can ask about getting your case sealed/expunged.

Having an attorney is always a good thing, and you can ask for a diversion program. If you do not get a diversion program and are found guiilty or plead guility yes there will be a record.
