    New tub/shower enclosure
I currently have a tub/shower combo with a liner (must be 25+ years old). I'm going to rip everything out and install tile, new shower and tub faucet and new rough in valve. I'm just looking for some expert advice or tips on how I should go about doing everything. I figure do my due diligence now instead of when I'm knee deep in the project. I plan on removing all the old drywall and putting up hardibacker, good/bad idea? Can the hardibacker go right on studs then tiles on that? Or do I need green board behind it?

    Current conditions:
    Vinyl liner
    3 knob faucet control
    Sliding glass door

    New:
Ceramic tile (12"x12") up to ceiling
    Single know faucet control
    Sliding glass door

Any thoughts or tips are greatly appreciated.

Ok I'm going to try to find you a link to Patty who just did all of the same work. I recommend a Swanstone model 3260 retro fit for your situation, about $250. Its perfect for converting a tub into a shower and yes go with Hardibacker scewed and glued directly to the studs. Sterling bypass shower door would run about $400 and I'd pick a Moen or Delta single handle mixing valev, another $200. Adds up quick and this doesn't buy your tile or modified thinset and grout. You'll be over $2k before you know it.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will try it. I have another question about the sheetrock with the showerbase I am trying to install. I found there is a gap (space) about 1/2" between wall stud and showerbase on both (left and right) sides after I lay down the shower base (or 1" on one sides)....

"Do they make a drain receptor with female threads on the inside that could be glued to the 2" pipe afer the base is set, and with the drain grate screwing into that?" They do but I'm not too sure you can use it on a manufactured shower base. It's called a "flange type shower drain", (see image)...
