What is the absolute best breed for guard dogs? I have been looking in to different dogs but am not sure what breed would be the best. Any info would help.

There are guard dogs that are left on properties to protect at night and there are your basic garden variety of dog that if trained properly will become a pet and protect you no matter what. You certainly don't want a dog trained for attack. That would lead to trouble. German Sheppards are intelligent and won't take things too far if threatened. You want someone warned, not torn apart.

Some breeds are being discriminated against which means you cannot get homeowners insurance with that breed on the property.

I have German Shepherds - they warn but if push comes to shove, they push back. Assertive without being aggressive.

While many here may disagree, I have to say some of the best dogs I've ever owned were pure bred MUTTS from the animal shelters or humane society.

Maybe it's just me, but when you save a dog from someplace like that, they know it.

I've had pure breads that cost hundreds of dollars that didn't behave any better, were no easier to train, and were never as loyal and obedient as the mixed up dogs that were rescued.

Should you decide to adopt, try to choose a younger one, that way you don't have as many bad habits to break, before you start to train them with the habits you want.

I have had mutts, purebreds, borzoi. All were foundlings and wonderful and all different ages. They were all my best friends and when push came to shove, they were all there for me no matter what. Living on a farm and having to rely on your own resources and within 25 miles of Detroit, well, I was quite glad my old borzoi was around even if he didn't bark!

I've had everything from imported AKCs to mutts to, as you said, foundlings - I have never actively sought out a dog but quite a few sure have found me!

One of mine is a seizure from a dog fight ring (I work with the Police and they called me) and the other - an AKC of all things! - was taken from an abusive household when she was 7 weeks old.

(I always say I'm afraid to answer the door when the bell rings for fear it's another homeless dog!)

Of all the dogs I've owned, 2 and 3 at a time, all lived to ripe old ages, my heart was (and probably always will be) owned by a yellow Lab, a black Lab and a GSD. Sometimes there's just a connection...

JKT = hugs from me and my old walker hound who was a foundling and rescued by me at five weeks. :) She and I made a quilt together. She is napping on the couch as I write this. Long walks do her in now; she is a big dog at l0 years old and thank god no hip displasia and she won't have. She and I used to walk l5 k a day in the country and she started that at a year old. She hs a big yard, loves chasing squirrels and you would never know she was l0. I don't know what I would ever do without her.
