    Scald Guard
I am completely remodeling a bathroom (new shower addition and new drain pipes) and opted for a two-handle shower setup. The inspector said that I need a scald guard on the valve, but this does not make sense. Since the temperature of the water is controlled by the position of each handle it seems impossible to install a scald guard. For instance, if you only turned the hot water on, how could a scald guard work? There is no cold water supplied to maintain the correct temperature. Additionally, American Standard does not make a two-handle shower valve with scald guard. Is my inspector wrong? If he is not, how does this work?

Maybe I can enlighten you to his suggestion. A scald guard makes sure that anyone flushing a toilet (cold water) or running any appliance using cold water, does not effect someone using a shower or running a bath. (ie, you have the water set having a shower, and then someone flushes a toilet and immediately the water combination looses its cold feature). We recommend this for seniors' bathrooms, especially in a house with multiple appliances.
