    Amend Tax return - 2007
    Hi,

I have to amend my return for 2007 to claim Child Tax Credit ($1000), which I missed while filling. The issue is - I have to go back to India in 1st week of June - 2008 and if I give the current address (which I mentioned in original return), and they send check to me (probably after 6-8 weeks) I may not be in US to collect.

    Therefore, I want to know:
Can I ask them to do the direct deposit? Even if in original tax refund, I asked to mail the check?
Can I attach a application and request IRS to do the direct deposit with the amended return?
Can I give the India address?

If above options are not possible, then I can give my friends address in US. [which is last option for me :( ]

Please advise best way which I should do (may be different which I didn't think of).

Your help is required and appreciated.

    Many Thanks,
    MA

You CANNOT direct deposit for an amended return.

Unless you have a friend who can accept the mail, you will HAVE to give the Indian address, which should NOT be a problem if you are legally allowed to claim the Child Tax Credit.

    Hi AtlantaTaxExpert,

May I know if I can still amend my tax return? My accountant filled-out my 1040 form without checking the CTC option since I haven't gotten my son's ITIN yet at that time of filing. Now that I got his ITIN, can I file an amendment to claim a CTC? Thanks.

    Regards,

Yes, you can file amended tax return. Only point is to make sure that you are eligible for child tax credit as already pointed out by AtlantaTaxExpert.

Thanks, MukatA. I verified that I am eligible for the CTC. Can I file the amendment by myself or should I ask my accountant to do it since he filed my original tax return?

    Andrew:

I would have the accountant do it, at NO CHARGE to you if it was HIS mistake that caused the CTC to NOT be claimed.

That is the general standard for tax professionals: if the mistake belongs to the tax pro, he fixes it at no extra charge. If YOU forgot to provide the information needed, then he can charge you for the time and effort needed to amend the return.
