    Split Bradford pear tree
There is a Bradford pear tree between our driveway and our home -- last year several smaller, but heavy, branches came off after a storm... they were light enough for me to drag to the street for pickup. But last weekend, after another storm, the tree (about
30 feet high) 'split' and the fallen branches COVERED my husband's Explorer. With neighbors and chain saws they cleared the debris -- the fallen branches were 10" in diameter. I was out of town, but if my Saturn had been in the driveway, it probably would've been crushed, as I park right next to the tree. My question is, now that this huge 'split' has happened, is it more likely that another will occur? I am afraid to park in my usual driveway spot since this happened. Thank you for any advice you can offer!

You can do one of two things. You can 'belt' the split to secure each side or you can cut it down. If you don't want you the fruit, or if it isn't fruit producing then do you really need the tree there for aesethic reasons ?

I would suggest the removal of the entire tree. Although Bradford Pear Trees are nice looking, they do not seem to "weather" storms very well.
