Hey:confused: I am 18 I want to get married to my boyfriend that is a immigrant, my mom doesn't agree with me getting married to him she said that if I wanted to get married I needed her permission before h can apply to get the green card? Is this true?

If you don't need her permission to marry him you don't need her permission to sponsor him.

Depends on your age - I believe it's 18 in every State but Nebraska.

You should be able to marry without your mothers permission.
In the US 18 makes you an adult.

But then does the immigrant have legal status here in the US, getting married does not give him any automatic rights.

If you don't have a full time job you can't sponsor him so maybe your mom meant she won't co-sign as a sponsor or something.

My advice is don't... your 18, why would you want to get married just so some guy can get a green card?

If you:

18 years of age
have tax return back 3 years with income over $18K

then you can marry him without getting permission or financial assistance from your mother. If you are not qualified to be his sponsor, don't get yourself in trouble. By the way, you'd better run background check on your sweetheart and make sure he doesn't have any criminal records, no drugs, no bigamy, etc. If he has one or more of these, it means you will need a lawyer to help filing the petition which will result in a few thousand dollars fee plus application fees, etc.

I can't find anything on the 3 years of tax returns, income over $18,000 - do you have a site?

Please don't fall for this get married to an alien. I see so many white American women here in Ohio with Mexican looking men and most of them have little kids. I saw one Saturday at Wallyworld who tells the whole story. She was a nice looking white woman with a little boy around 2. He was a Mexican looking man. She had a recently blackened left eye. She did not look happy. What does this tell you? That he's obviously hitting and knocking her around and she's taking it as she has a little boy by him and is afraid of him either leaving her or hurting the boy. Do you envision you in this picture? I do.

Don't do this or you will be very, very sorry. You will be essentially trapped in a no win relationship and will be calling your mother up and begging her to rescue you.

I agree with twinkiedooter...

If I were in your shoes, I will run background check on him... and see how many misdemeanor/felony cases he already had. Then you can foresee what your marriage marriage will be like. If you see signs of debts, bad credit, physical abuses, DUI, drugs, stealing, firearms, etc... Run!!

Well, here we go - sorry, but I find this post inflammatory. Maybe some Mexicans have violent tempers (I think the term is Hispanics), maybe some cannot handle booze and love violence, maybe some are in gangs but I find the "most" part racist.

Fill in any other race/ethnic group and it is no less insensitive.

You only need to show your income for the past 12 months...

Anyway don't do it, he obviously just wants to get citizenship and will probably leave afterwards, don't mess up your life to help someone else out.
