My wife and daughter were both taking a shower when suddenly the water stopped for a few seconds and then came back on with much lower pressure. All the faucets in the house have less pressure, but the toilets don't seem to be affected. The house is about 8 years old and we are on city water. I have never had any problems before with water pressure. Any suggestions to what the problem could be.

Only a thought...

Do you have a pressure reducing valve with a strainer installed near your water main (meter)... See pic.

If so, the strainer on bottom may need to be removed and cleaned to restore your pressure.

If no strainer, possible city is working on water in your area... maybe flushing hydrants, for example.

Can always call fire department non-emergency number and see if they are flushing hydrants in your area.

Can also always call the local water department and ask if work is being done on water mains in your area.

That surge you talked about may also have disturbed some sediment in pipes and clogged the aerators at faucet spout ends.. remove aerators and clean, then run water without aerators and then re-install aerators... that may help to restore some of the pressure... may not, too... ;) But may be worth a try... Mark

Thanks for your response. It turned out to be a problem with the city line. Someone a street over from mine hit a water main. Water was restored in the morning. Thanks again.
