As far as over filled oil is concerned, there ais a gauge for oil checking, t pull out an you can se oil level. Backfiring or misfiring is due to mainly unburned fuel. What I feel chek the spark plugs. If they are of may be distributor. Sometimes the cables get damaged and it may cause improper ignition or current supply. Check these first. If yo have not changed the timing belt then there is no timing problem, I suppose.

Beginning with the plugs, if one is stuck, it has probably has been stuck since before the other three have been changed. You or someone is going to have to analyze if the plug or the plug wire is your problem. Or determine if the problem is something mechanical with the engine itself.
Improper timing could lead to a misfire, but without knowing anything about your car, I could only speculate.
Overfilling the crankcase with oil can cause problems, but it would have to be significantly overfilled to do anything.
Have the entire ignition system addressed. Have the compression tested as well. That can tell you a lot.

Some more info would really help. First, when you say a whole lotta work done to the engine recently, this would be of great importance.
Second, state make, model, year of vehicle. We have a lot of reference material to help, but first, help us to help you.
