My grandaughter has a UTI since last week and has been having some difficulties peeing. She is not potty-trained yet, but after last weekend's urine collection (catherer), she has been traumatized (according to her doctor) and has refused to pee for up to 48 hours. She keeps holding it in, and only pees in the tub with water running. She holds herself and cries, and that is how we know that she wants to pee. We try sitting her on the baby toilet, the adult toilet, but she won't go. She only wants the tub. Is this normal? She is still taking her medication, and she looks like she feels better.
We are taking her back this week for follow-up and they will probably will do another urine collection, that will traumatize her even more.
Any suggestions on how we can help her with this traumatic event?

Oh I am so sorry for what your granddaughter is going through.
My daughter had kidney reflux until she was about 2 years old and always had uti's.
I didn't like the catheter experience either, and asked them for another way.

They gave me paediatric urine collection bags that I would put on her.
I'd put the diapers on over that (very loosely) then I would check it frequently during the night.
Once she would go, I would put it in the sanitary collection cup they gave me and store it in the fridge
Until I could take it to the doctors office the next morning.

My daughters doctors also gave her medication that made the burning stop to take along with the antibiotics which
You could ask them about.

The warm water may feel soothing because it burns so bad to pee when you have a uti.
Since your granddaughter is 3 years old, she may be able to go in the bag by simply asking her to.
They are quite simple to use and there is no traumatizing negative effects associated with them.

You need to give her probiotics or yogurt too to replace the good bacteria that the antibiotics take out. They have to be taken in between the antibiotics. Like if the antibiotics are taken at 8 am and 4 pm the probiotics or yogurt should be given around noon.

Thanks for your recommendations, but I know for a fact that she is not going to pee in the bag. If she knows that it is there, she will hold it in. She has a follow-up appointment this Thursday and I hope they do not do the catherer again. Her antiobiotics are all gone and she is peeing, (in the tub). She is supposed to have a sonogram of some kind, but I don't know how is that going to happen, since she can't sit still.
Now my question to you is, what kind of yogurt? She is a picky eater and I know that she is not going to like regular yogurt. She doesn't have a sweet tooth, so no cakes, candies or even ice cream.

Stonyfield is best because it is organic and doesn't have all the sugar and you can mix her favorite fruit with it to help sweeten it. It is best to not add the fruit because it will add the fruits sugars but to get her to eat it I would anyway cause it can't be as bad as the pre added sugars.

I don't know how to get her to pee in the bag but hold her hand and reassure her as much as you can.
