I am renovating the kitchen and would like to know in a kitchen with the dimensions of 14ft by 11ft space how many ceiling lights would be required? Is there a minimum that you should have for that amt of space and how far from the wall should they be and how far apart from each other.

I doubt if you code would require more lights than you personally would want. 4 or 6 cans using 120 watt bulbs should be almost over kill. You could always drop to a 60 watt buld later or use a dimmer. 4 or 6 cans makes anice pattern for a 11x14 room. Be sure to by cans labeled for remodeling and not new construction, they are different and you want remodel. The hard part is snaking the cable above the ceiling to reach each light. Your raftsers are probably 16" on center and that's way to close for fixtures. If you go down this road just write me back and I'll show you how to run your cable. Good luck

I'm wrapping up my own kitchen renovation right now with the dimensions of 10.5 X 14(16 on the long side) and am using recessed lights.

I initially ran with four cans, and it was too spotty with dark areas.

I now use six cans running BR 30(65 watt) bulbs with a dimmer. The light is even and if I don't feel like spinning the numbers off my meter outside, I can dim it down :)

I should note that I'm also using point light over the sink.

For spacing, I simply used even amount of space between the fixtures from themselves and the wall.

It's currently missing two bulbs because I'm getting ready to texture and began removing the fixtures, but hopefully it gives you an idea of the light this layout will distribute.
