    Deprovera and pregnancy after usage
Hi I have been on the depo for about 6 and a half years. My next shot was due the day after christmas 2007. I was wondering since I never had a period during using the depo will my period come back before I can get pregnant or can I get pregnant without having my period first? Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Also I forgot to state that I did not get the shot due after christmas we would like to get pregnant now and would like to know what to expect.

Depo is a very serious birth control drug. Women are not advised to take this medication if they want to become pregnant within a certain number of years.

With that said, it takes anywhere from 18 months (or possibly 24 months as you have been taking it so long) to be completely out of your system. Your periods will return eventually, but it may take a number of months to do so.

Getting pregnant NOW, will be the tricky part. As I said it can take up to 18 months before a woman is able to conceive after taking depo provera.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question I had heard that it would take a month up to a year before I could get pregnant but now I know that it can actually take up to 2 years. We are not "trying" to get pregnant just would love a child and whenever God blesses us with one is fine I was just coureous to know about how long. But I still have 1 unanswered question will my period return before I can conceive or can I get pregnant without my period?

It is possible to get pregnant without a period, heck I did, LOL

Anyway, your period has little to do with conception, it is ovulation that is needed for conception to occur. Many women ovulate without having a period, yet others have periods without ovulating. Chances are, your period will return in a couple of months after quitting the Depo.

I know, it's kind of confusing, but our bodies are very complex pieces of machinery.

Thank you very much I really appreciate that. I wasn't sure. I have a beautiful 6 year old daughter from my 1st marriage. I am 27 and my second husband is 26 he wants a baby tomorrow and so does my daughter I am just worried about a pregnancy now because I've had a lot of health problems due to the depo and with my daughter I did everything by the book, ate right, prenatals dr appointments you name it and I still had her prematurly. I guess I am just worried about having a healthy pregnancy and baby and am looking for the best way to achieve that in whatever time I have available. Thanks again so much P.S I was also wondering will my periods be horrible when they do return? I mean isn't that to flush out all the eggs and stuff and I haven't at all for nearly 7 years...

Nah, your periods shouldn't be bad at all, actually quite normal. You're thinking too hard, LOL. You have not ovulated, so the eggs stay in your ovary until it's time to ovulate again.

Now, make sure you are taking prenatal vitamins NOW!! It won't help with conception or menstruation, but the folic acid will be there should you become pregnant and not know it for a while.

Thanks again. I am just over thinking this just like I do to everything else lol. I didn't even think about using prenatals now but I will def start. You seem to actually know what you are talking about and I appreciate you taking your time to reply to me every other cite I have visited no one ever reponds or you get a quack that doesn't say anything... Is there anything else you can think of that I might need to start doing? I just had an abnormal pap a few months ago I had moderate to sever squamous cells and had to have a loop procedure they are hoping that they got everything so it doesn't turn into cervical cancer but I don't go back for another pap for another month or so.

You are very welcome. I am currently a nursing student, and in December I finished my women's health and pediatric rotation, so I know a little, LOL

I can't think of anything else really. Prenatals that include folic acid should be taken by every woman of childbearing age. It aids in prevention of neural tube defects such as spina bifida. Healthy diet, exercise and rest. Stay away from smoking and alcohol. You know the usual, lol.

Make sure you keep that appt for the pap, and make a list of questions to ask your doc when you are there.

Great advise! You have def helped me and given me some peace of mind to my worries. Hopefully all of this will help anyone else that has already or will view this. Also do you know of any "bad" effects from being on the depo for so long. I just found out that you are supposed to cycle on and off the depo which I never did.
