Just bought an old home,and after putting in new copper plumbing I noticed a wet spot on front lawn in the area of my 3/4 inch galvanized feed.I want to know if I can repair this feed,without calling a contractor?Is there a pipe patch available that I could wrap around old pipe?There is a curb-stop shut off near the driveway entrance.

In my area, if you're digging, you need a permit and a qualified contractor.

Sometimes we will bypass this and do it ourselves, but a lot of it depends on the neighbors. If one neighbor complains - and the city comes out - you'll get them pretty ticked off... and you can suffer a variety of ways.

Another issue is how fast can you do it - so as not to draw attention...

But your job, I think, is bigger than that.

I'll guess you'll want a contractor to do this. There's no shortcut for buried galvanized. Inside, you can use a compression fitting, but you don't want to bury one of those. You'll want the line dug to joints, and the line between the joints replaced with copper.

To boot, the contractor would be responsible for any utility lines that may be running along there.

Hi Joe,

My best advice-- replace the galvanized service with 3'4" PVC.

Having said that, there is a repair tape on the market that will do exactly what you ask. It's called Pow-R- Wrap and you can check it out at;
