Which set of chemical name and chemical formula for the same compound is correct?
Choose from these
1.Iron(11) oxide, Fe2O3
2.aluminum fluorate, AlF3
3.tin(IV) bromide, SnBr4
4.potassium chloride, K2Cl2
You can look up all of these on the Internet. Just Google "Iron(II) oxide", "aluminum fluorate", "tin(IV) bromide", and "potassium chloride"
Iron(II) oxide
aluminum fluorate
tin(IV) bromide
potassium chloride
The other way to do it is to use a periodic table to figure out the valences of the species involved. For example, if someone said "sodium chloride, Na2Cl2", I would look at the periodic table. Chloride is Cl-, Sodium is Na+. I would expect the formula to be NaCl. However, there's always the possibility of a
dimer (two molecules merging to form 1). The question I would have to answer is whether this is possible or whether it makes sense.
