    When you have these kind of questions all you have to do is come up with some sort of equation. So let x represent are number. The question says half a number so then we know its x/2 and then it says if we add 176 to that we get 199 so the equation looks like this:
    x/2 + 176 = 199

    Now you easily solve for x by isolating for x.

    Solve the problem by reversing the steps ; reverse the "add 176" part first, then reverse the "half" part. You start with the 199.
