Hey All,

Speedball got me rolling as did the help from a family friend. I have questions regarding how to vent my set-up. I'm basically building what I would consider a gally like bathroom with all fixtures inline over a central 4" drain. My basement is layed out as such from left to right looking at this problem.....

Laundry room and open sump > furnace > hot water heater > main sewage drain apporx. 3' above basement floor > new sewage basin > toilet > sink > shower.

I was told to vent each fixture seperately 42" above floor. No problem. See attached. My question is once I tie all my vents into the vent coming out of the basin can I then vent into the cast iron coming down from the bathroom above? My vent for the upstairs is completely covered by duct work. Completely! I could take my vent's up to the attic via the wall and tie in up there but I'm not sure what I'll run into if I do that.

Brian,

In my last post on this page I gave you the best advice that I could. Which was; "You do realize that you're getting into major surgery here don't you? You'll need plumbing skills and knowledge to add a bathroom group from scratch.
You may want to pay a plumber to come in and lay the job out and give you a material list."

I really hate to rain on your parade but you do need professional help in laying out the trench, the vents, and the materials list. Simply put you just don't have the skills or the knowledge to attempt a basement rough in from scratch and especially with a holding tank and grinder pump involved.

Almost everything that you've shown me is wrong. There just isn't any other way to put it.
I'm going to list just a few of the things I've found wrong.
(1)in image#1 your trench is too close to the wall. You have the wrong fitting picking up the toilet. It should be a 4" combination, what you have there looks like a clean out tee.
(2) In image #2 you have the wrong fitting picking up the lavatory. it should be a 4 X 2 combo while you have a drainage tee. Remember in drainage ALWAYS use the fittings with the greatest radius.
(3) In image #3 unless the trench is 12" off the wall to the center of the main that won't fly either. Also you have the same wrong tee picking up the toilet
(4) In image #4 Is that a open sump pit I see that you're draining into? If so you'll have a open cesspool in your basement.

In the current image you sent today. Let me count the ways.
You may not vent to a stack that has a bathroom group discharging into it. You may not combine the vent from the holding tank and the vent from the other fixtures in the basement. You may not install a "S" trap on the lavatory and vent from the main. About the only thing I can agree with is the check valve in the grinder pump discharge.

Brian, I have all your pictures and paper work printed out and in my " work In Progress" folder. I'm not giving up on you and I'll help in any way I can but I can't teach you plumbing on this site. You're in over your head and need professional plumbing help. I urge you, in the strongest way I can. To get a licensed plumber in to help and guide you. You can learn by doing as so many plumbers helpers have. I'm afraid if you continue you'll find your house "red tagged" and you and your family will find yourselves living in a motel until your house is brought back into code.

Please believe me when I say that I've given you the best possible advice that I could. Let me know what you decide. Tom

Hummmm...

Hey Tom,

As my pics will show my trench is easily a 1 foot from wall to center.
Image 1 shows one way the toilet could have been routed obviously too close to the wall. Hence the set-up in Image 3. A 4" Tee to toilet flange. What's wrong with that?

Image 2 simply shows a 4" Tee with a 2" on the branch. What's wrong with that into the wall into a 2" Tee with 1.5" on the branch to the sink drain?

Tom - Image 4 is my 30" deep basin simply placed without the lid as I am roughing it in. The questions regarding the venting are simply that. Questions. I could very easily run them into my attic and connect to my current vent or vent out the roof on their own.

This is interesting what connections do you see as wrong or not working?

1. Off the wall a foot? - Clearly
2. Image 3 - Toilet connection 4" Tee to 3" Toilet Flange
3. Image 2 - Sink Tee 4" to 2" to run to a 2" Tee with 1.5" on the branch for vent.
4. The basin san lid.
