Engine Swap Problems 11 hp Briggs and Stratton
I blew an engine on my 2001 Murray Mid Engine Ridder. A friend gave me and older model engine and
Ii found problems with connecting the wires. On the engine blown there was one yellow wire fron the coil to the wiring harness and one red wire from the strator to the wiring harness. My problem is that the replacement engine has a wire from the coil to the throttle linkage and two wires from the strator. Can someone tell me how to connect the wires. I have tried several diffenent connections, however, nothing works yet. If I need to run new wires I will be OK with that. I am not real concerned about all the safety switches, I would just like to get the engine to crank.
It will crank over if I run a wire directly from the battery to the starter, however, is does not fire through the spark plug. Can someone tell me how to connect these wires.

You should only need the probably red wire for the charging of the battery from the stator. And the kill wire is for stopping the engine from firing on the throttle control.

I ewas able to get a spark in the sparlk plug by connecting the wires as suggested. However, I can not get the engine to start, it only back fires through the carb. What do I need to do now?

Got my engine running as the problem was a broken key in the flywheel. No I can not get the speed of the engine to increase when I push the throttle control. The control moves OK but the engine stays same speed. Do I need to adjust the governor? If so how?

I got back on here and was fixing to tell you to check the flywheel key. Now then, for the next problem. Can you disconnect the throttle cable and manually operate the carb and get the desired effects? If not, and this is a used engine, it may be best to remove the carb and give it a thourough cleaning. I will try to be here on the net this weekend, then probably won't be back until next Saturday. I have a busy week this week, have classes, and going to kill hogs Friday again.
