    Performa auto dry erratic
    Maytag
    PYE3200AYW

    I have an 8 year old electric Maytag Performa dryer. I noticed my clothes were coming out damp when I use auto dry, a sign in the past that the outlet to outside needed to be cleaned out... but it was clean. I have checked the entire exit pathway for the exhaust and cleaned out the insides of the dryer (got a lot of lint) and still no change. Timed dry works fine, but when using the auto the unit stops either when the clothes are dry, when the clothes are just damp (about ten minutes early), or with the clothes pretty wet (today the dryer stopped with a large load before the washer was even in the final spin cycle). I'm thinking the inconsistency is the key to what's wrong... (as I understand it when it heats up to a certain point then the timer starts to move). Likely the timer or likely the thermostat in the exhaust port? Maybe something else?

    Any help is much appreciated!

    Any odd noises from your dryer recently? Did you remove the front of the dryer and look inside? Is the exhaust tube still attached to the blower housing inside the dryer?

    No odd noises. I did remove the front and cleaned the entire exit pathway, including visually inspecting the exhaust that goes outside and it is clear. It is not a blockage issue. With the problem being erratic it makes me think that either the timer or the thermostat/sensor located in the exhaust port is bad. Thanks for any assistance!

    Is the blower wheel tight on the motor shaft? How long is your dryer exhaust and is it a straight run? I don'belive it is a thermostat but before I condemn a timer I want for you to check all the possibilities I keep providing.

    I did a few loads on med heat and it worked fine, so I checked the wheel and it was tight. Then I checked the amount of air coming out of the dryer and it was a lot more than what was coming out outside, which surprised me because there was only 1/4 of an inch of lint on the inside of the pipes and I didn't think that would make very much difference... but I guess with 7 feet up and a 90 degree turn and then 15 feet and a 45 degree turn and a few more feet it all adds up. I grabbed my old plumbing snake and duct taped a t-shirt and part of an old scratchy door mat and hooked up a flexible duct vent to the outside with my leave blower and long story short it works just fine now. The leaf blower shredded the lint so I didn't have any lint to pick up.

    I always use the leaf blower! Customers give me a funny look when I come in their house with it but it works like a charm!
