Can I use a basement floor drain as a shower?
My guess is at this point you already have a clue what I am asking but to elaborate I will explain the situation. We have just purchased a house that has a completely finished basement except for a couple of rooms. One of those is the Bathroom. It has a toilet installed and walls framed up but no drain for the shower. There is however in the right place a regular old floor drain. I am told that if I wanted to convert that to take a shower fitting I would have to bust up the floor and I am really trying to get around that. My question is this. What would be the reason for not just forming a square around the current drain and making a 4 to 6 inch concrete" around it? After this all I would have to do is put up the water resistant sheet rock and cover it with the water proof paneling. I have attached a photo that might explain what I am thinking. Yes, My question. Will this work? Is there something very importaint I am not considering? I would appreciate comments. Thank you in advance!

I think you have conered all the bases. Using the floor drain as a shower drain is acceptable and since floor drains need no vent this puts you ahead of the game. Growler,( our local code expert) might not be happy with converting a floor drain to a shower without a vent but this page is set up for the easiest do-it-yourselfer solution. When I was a boy we had a floor drain shower in our basement. Good luck, Tom
