I'm not familiar with the laws of England, but there should be an immigration department such as in the United States. Her husband probably told her this to keep her 'under his control'. Try going to a legal advisor or directly to the British Consulate and ask these questions. Or what they would call Ministry of Justice.

There might also be a legal assistance site in the UK that you can look up the laws there. Good Luck.

I you have difficulty in finding it, let me know and I will try and find a site for your somehow.

I just came upon this site, and it also has a forum. You might also understand the legalese better than I as I am fluent only in 'american' not the oxford english. Anyway try the forum, read up a bit, and loads of luck.

    :)
