    Denial entrance to another country
    I received a dui about 6 yrs ago. My passport is expired and I need to get a new one. Will my new passport have information regarding my dui that would deny me entrance to canada or mexico? I was told when border guards swipe your passport it gives them any info regarding any brushes with the law, misdemeanors or felony. I do not want to be turned away at the border. Thank you

    Hello nick:

    Your new passport will be implanted with an RFID chip. Those are the same chips they install on merchandise that is removed when you pay. If it's not removed, when you pass through those things at the door, an alarm will go off.

    So, they won't have to swipe your passport any more. All you have to do is wait in line and they'll know exactly who you are.

    Does the chip have your record, or does the chip trigger a computer that has your record? I don't know. I know Canada is interested in felons entering their country, so I'll bet they'll know all about you. I wouldn't think they'll turn you down, however, if it was just a misdemeanor. However, I'll bet they won't let you in if you're a felon.

    You can go through a pre-approval procedure for entry into Canada.

    I don't think Mexico cares.

    No passports do not contain this info, BUT... of course your passport does contain your exact ID, so all they have to do is check government records and your DUI will show up. The new chip only contains the exact info that is on the visual part of the passport, only your ID.

    For entry into Canada your best bet would be to contact the Canadian Embassy in the US and simply ask them if your record will prevent entry. To confirm the above, your passport does not have your criminal record written in it (or stored on this new chip) but when Canada Customs enteres your name into their system they have access to your US criminal record.
