Hello All,

We adopted our second dog back in April this year, both our dogs are from the same place and come with zero medical history. Whilst Artie is in great health on the face of it. Full of energy, great appetite, breath smells fine. When he passes wind it is the most horrific stench I have ever experienced. Now, Poppy, on the other hand farts loudly left, right and centre, but they never smell bad, whereas Artie's... ugh.

We feed them the same food, dry kibble which seems to go down well, we hve tried different types of food on him in the past and he likes them all the same but with no discernible effect on his digestive smells. I'm just wondering if Artie's gut flora is a bit out of whack and what I could give him to try and rebalance his bacteria. Someone suggested natural yoghurt, what do you think?

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Oh, finally, he's all up to date with worming etc, etc.

I doubt yogurt will do much good, but a little surely won't hurt. You have to watch the advice you get on feeding dogs. Those fanatics into alternative diets for themselves preach the same gospel for dogs. There is abundant scientific evidence that people and dogs need a complete and balance diet. We are free to eat too much fat, sugar, salt, etc. leaving us short of vitamins, minerals, and too many calories. Dogs will thrive on the common dog chows that provide a carefully formulated diet and are better off with very little else.

Often a change of chow does help. You might also look at the chances that Artie is supplementing his diet with who know what. He could be eating feces, his own or anything he finds. There is also grass, bark, dirt, etc.

There are charcoal pills from the pet supply. They never seemed to help my dogs. The only thing I know that ever worked for sure was moving our one dog's feeding to bed time. By morning he was fit to have around.
