    Finishing a low-ceilinged attic
    Hello,

I am considering buying this particular house, however, if I did, I would want to finish the attic to make a loft style bedroom and possibly add a bathroom over the kitchen. The home is very small, 850 sq ft. The entryway has a cathedral ceiling and I would want to create one in the living room as well so the finished portion of the attic would only be about 600 sq feet. The problem with this is that the ceiling in the attic is only about 7 to 8 ft high at the very peak so there is not much usable space.

This house is in Southern New Hampshire and I am wondering about how much is would cost to build up the back wall of the house and change the pitch of the roof so that there would be more space to walk around. I would keep the front part of the roof the same because that is where the cathedral ceilings would be so it wouldn't matter. We could do the drywall, flooring, plumbing and electric. I'm just wondering about the building costs.

    Thanks so much.

I think you need a dormer cut into your roof to provide enough head room to make that space livable. Contractors cost varry from state to state so you will need several estimates. I would be sure to use a contractor that has years of experience and a solid reputation.
