It definitely sounds like a panic attack. Although, people from all walks of life experience them in different ways but always in a social or semi social situation. For instance, a client of mine found she eventually could not go to a grocery store because the ordeal was just too painful thinking about all the different people in the store and how she would have to interact with them, for instance, finally ending up at the cashier and having to take her groceries out of the cart, passing the time of day with the girl, talking to the butcher about the kind of meat she wanted. She just could not do it.
There is no magic pill to correct this situation you find yourself in, but counselling is always recommended, as my client found that is what helped her and thinking positive all the time. It was a constant fight to be normal and she, and she was in her late 70s, so not easy; she eventually won. No more panic attacks. It is mind over matter.
She found some good reading material at the library, I might add, self help books that she enjoyed. Hang in there.
