Dogs and cats are usually lactose-intolerant, so am wondering why the vet said cottage cheese.

From what I understand, (because I don't eat the stuff) cottage cheese is fairly low in lactose and is supposed to be soothing to upset stomach. Stick with the low-fat, low-sodium varieties though.

Whenever my dogs have been sick I've been told NOT to feed dairy - guess it varies Vet to Vet.

He said a "spoon" of cottage cheese, so maybe enough to make the rice interesting and give it a goopy consistency. I personally would have said, instead of cottage cheese, to mix in some low-fat, low-sodium chicken or beef broth, but then I'm not a vet.

I suppose it does, I have noticed that some of the newer vets that I have worked with have different ideas that what I am used to.
Personally, what has always worked for me and my patients at work have been the bland prescription diets we carry.
At home I have used lean chicken and rice, clear broth, etc. with much success.
I have never used cottage cheese, so I have no idea of it's effectiveness.
