    Need a "vertical kick plate"
Is there such a thing that functions like a kick plate does at the bottom of a door but is actually placed vertically, from the bottom of the door up to the doorknob? If so, what is its name, so I know what to search for online?

I vaguely recall seeing something like that which was made of clear, thin plexiglass, on a door in a commercial setting. We have dogs that like to scratch on our bedroom door, near the jamb, if it is closed and they want to be let in. The door was painted a new color just a month ago, and already they have scratched a few spots down to its former color. I would love if I could find a type of clear covering that was not a complete eyesore to protect this vertical section of the door, so that I wouldn't have to touch up the paint so often.

    Thanks for any advice!

You can buy sheets of plexiglas at most box stores. Cut it to fit your door and screw or nail it in place. You must drill holes for the screws or nails.

My suggestion would be to get some plexiglass, cut it to the length and width you need. Attach it to the door with either some spots of hot glue or some double sided tape.

However, plexiglass will scratch. You could do the same thing with real glass which won't scratch, but you would need double thickness glass. You would need to purchase from glass dealer and have the edges sanded.
