If he is just starting to show symptoms, he is contagious, and can be for awhile. It will likely become pretty obvious whether he has it by what symptoms develop. You can almost think of it as the common cold... caused by a virus, pretty common if he is around other young children, spread basically the same way in most situations, may cause some symptoms that make him uncomfortable for a little while, rarely serious, clears up basically on its own, and all you can really do is treat for comfort until it passes. As with a cold, best prevention is frequent washing of hands and keeping hands away from eyes, nose, and mouth.
Biggest difference are the common symptoms of sores in the mouth and a rash... either of which won't likely be hard to miss. As was said, if you notice these types of things, and it causes you concern, have him seen by the doctor. If a diagnosis is made, definitely let any childcare setting he may go to be aware as it will possibly spread like wildfire if they don't take precautionary steps, and parents should be made aware that exposure has taken place so that they can know what to watch for.
