Questions about mortar and repairing brick steps
I had red brick stairs repaired in Arpil by a reputable contractor. 35 bricks were replaced and an extra step/row was installed to make the steps within regualtion. Last week I noted that thre or four bricks are loose. And when you tap (with your knuckles) on some bricks you get a hollow sound, when you tap on others you get a solid sound. I am concerned that those that have a hollow sound, which are replaced bricks means that air pockets have formed in the mortar and they too will soon fail. The contractor is going to return but it appears he doesn't want to acknowledge this last issue. Thoughts?

Pockets don't form per say... what happens is the bonding fails. And you hear that hollow sound as the solid mechanical connection isn't there.

I agree... they did something wrong... and should repair it. Particularly this soon after the work was done. I feel its going to fail at some point... and think he's hoping it won't be anytime soon.

    Thank you appreciate the insight.
