    Shower Drain Replacement - Slab Foundation
    Looking for some advice. A couple of years ago we had our shower redone (pan, tile,etc.). Turns out it was a horribly done job. Ended up leaking. Tried to "fix" with caulk to no avail. Anyway, I have it completely torn apart and letting things dry completely. The pan was done very poorly. The base coat of mud was not sloped, it actually sloped outward in some areas, there was like a bowl depression around the drain. The drain has no weep holes. As I did the demo, there was more water under the membrane than on top and the 2x4s for the curb were completely soaked through.

    I will be replacing the drain with an adjustable one, with weep holes. The current drain appears to be bonded on. I've tried pulling on it, but it is solid. Looks like I will be cutting this one off (picture below). My question is that I think by having to cut the drain pipe that it will be to low and the replacement drain will not stick far enough up. With the limited space, I'm sure there will not be enough space to install a PVC coupling. I have not checked out drains physically, but all that I have seen on line are pretty standard as far as height. Is there some sort of connector/coupling that I can use to install the new drain?

    Well, it looks like I may be in luck. I picked up an adjustable drain and it looks like, with the flange and all, that I would need to cut about an inch off the drain pipe anyway.

    I think your re - build project would be the perfect place to try Schulters Kerdi system ( www schulter.com) for custom shower bases. No shower pan liner needed, they sell a wide variety drains, have excellent tech support, and video tutorials...

    I thought about Kerdi after reading about it, just too pricey for my blood.

    If it is'nt possible to install a new drain at the correct height with what is there it may be necessary to dig deeper and add a piece of P.V.C. to bring it back to the correct height.
