    Hipaa violations
I am a Registered Nurse and I work in a hospital in NC. I also have a charge nurse with whom I am responsible to report problems to. The problem is when I tell her anything about my patients, she goes and tells her respiratory therapist boyfriend, the security guards and anybody else who will listen to her gossip. I get tired of this, so I quit telling her anything that was not important. She is turn tells the nurse manager that I need to learn to communicate with her and that I am not telling her anything. Is it not a hipaa violation for her 1. to tell everybody coming and going about patients.

Yes it is, so talk to the nurse manager and explain why you started being reticent.

Correct, if she is violating HIPAA, it really needs to be reported, But of course remember, she will still be your boss after it is reported.

But it appears you have little choice

It is on my yearly evaluation that I don't communicate with my charge nurse. I have other charge nurses whom I don't mind sharing information about patients on a need to know basis, but this one only wants the information for gossip. She has 3 funeral home apps on her phone so she can see who has died, that's how nosey she is. I refused to sign the evaluation and have a meeting with the nurse manager tomorrow, but she is friends with this nurse.
