At this point you hire an electritican... because you have a broken or burned wire... and checking things can be very dangerous.

Well electricians will cost me a lot. I have some what knowledge of electrical wiring. Do you have any idea of what the problem could be.

****the people who previously lived my home have made junction points in the garage which are not visible****

Start by confirming power coming off the braeker and the power reaching your first receptacle of switch.

See, THOSE are a violation of code... I'm an Electronic Engineer, not a master electrician... and even I know code requires all junction points to be accessible. Meaning an access plate, and made inside a UL approved box. Not hidden behind plywood or sheet rock.

If you should have a fire... and its traced to faulty wiring that was not inspected... they have a basis to reject the claim. Quite honestly... if it was that haphazardly done by the previous owner... the problem could be anywhere.

I'm going to take a stab that if you have power leaving the breaker... but not getting to the outlet, one of those hidden junctions is at fault. (pray that they didn't just twist the wires together and use electrical tape to insulate them).

I think one of those has opened, melted, burned or something. You don't even know if sufficient gauge wire was used.

It could be a few things, most likely a broken or partially broken wire in the wall. You mentioned the previous owner put in wire junctions that are not visible, This could be the culprit. Either way, this could be a potentially dangerous situation; whatever you do, leave the breaker OFF until you or another qualified person fixes the problem.

Please consider exposing as much of the hidden wire you've mentioned, especially now that things have begun to fail. I agree with Kyle this could be a hazard so consider a good electrician as well...
