    Probibly because its about to fail in a very bad way...

    I assume you meant to say LEAKING and not linking...

    It needs replaced... and the sooner the better before it floods your basement.

    Sounds like maybe someone ran a screw into a pinhole leak. Time for a new HW heater I believe.
