We've lived in this particular apartment for the last four years and we've had plumbing problems almost the entire time. The problem is that the kitchen sink gets clog up and the bathroom sinks usually overflows with water from the kitchen. The landlord said it was because we let food get caught in the drain and since we've been a lot more careful about making sure no food gets caught in the drain. However what had previously only been happening occasionally has been happening a few times a month. We used to live in another apartment in the same building and we never had any problems with the plumbing so that leads us to believe its this particular apartment's plumbing.We've talked to the landlord, but he basically said we must be doing something to clog the sink up. Usually when the sink gets clogged up we use drano and it eventually fixes it, but as I said earlier its been happening more often and it is expensive to keep buying every month.

The problem is that in the last few days the sink seems as though its clogged, but the water usually goes down after 15 minutes. As a result we are unable to run water in the kitchen for more than a minute before the bathroom sink overflows. My question is would drano help in this situation or does something else need to be done?

This tells me that you have a partial blockage in the horizontal drain line in the wall.
I am no fan of using chemicals to clear a blockage. They only seem to work in TV ads.

The solution would be tom remove the "J bend" from the trap and send a snake up into the wall, (see image) . You'll hit a bend about 8 inches in but once past that you only have 6 more feet to run out. After, flush with a tub of hot water. Good luck, Tom
