My dog is scared to go for a walk
    Hi
I have a 2 year old staff dog. When I go to take him for a walk he gets all giddy but once we get outside he shakes and wants to come back indoors.

If you live in a city, I would say that he was spooked by something on a previous walk. I've known dogs who refused to budge when they got to a main drag even without any past events, just from all the traffic and noise. Could that be it, or are you more rural? And if rural, could something have scared him outside?

Have you had your dog for the whole two years ? Has he always been like this on walks? It has to be something that scared him pretty much.

I had the same problem. My dog is very small yorkie when I first got her I walked without a leash she would stay beside me sometimes go a bit crazy and smell everything. I decided to put her on a leash she didn't move I read so many articles they said to be patient. It didn't work for me I wanted to train her to walk beside me and go for long walks. She would shake and not move kind of stay like a tree. As much as this sounds mean you just have to look straight and walk, at first you will be dragging her its normal my dog was stubborn. Eventually you show her you're the boss and she walks, Now she is 1 and she can do tricks, walk run she know the boundries to not go into the streets.

I don't know if its cold outside but if it is put a coat on him or her my dog didn't like going out in the winter I bought boots and a coat she loved it!

My dog is a morkie and she is 3 pounds and a half. Treats can also help.

    Good luck!

Hi Blondlady, yes yorkies or morkies lend themselves well to pampering with coats and boots. Good idea. I like your advice.

This is neither correct nor valuable. You are correct - dragging a dog behind you sounds mean.

Finding out where there's a problem is what a responsible dog owner does. You were dragging a dog that weighs under 5 pounds by the neck?

Doesn't sound like a sound training method to me. In fact, in MY area of NY it's animal abuse.
