Can someone tell me about the books, banned for various reasons?
I am really very crazy to know about the books, I mean the names of the books, which have -at any stage of time- been banned by any country, person or community. I really look forward to know, read and discuss about the contents of such books, as I am aware that ban does not 'ban' a book, rather motivates the readers, through the length and breadth of the whole world to reach that book and read it, I mean finish it as early as feasible. Is not it?

We don't have a book discussion board here, and don't read banned books as a group.

Here is a web site that lists some books that have been banned and tells why for each book (click on the various links for even more information) --

I doubt there's a comprehensive list of all books that have ever been banned by anyone anywhere at any time. But some examples that come to mind:

    The Bible
    The Quran
All of the Harry Potter books
    Catcher in the Rye
    Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer
Romeo and Juliet, King Lear, The Merchant of Venice
Any book by a Jewish author
    The US Constitution
    Darwin's "Origin of Species"
A whole bunch of novels with themes of sexuality, such as Ulysses, Lady Chatterly's Lover, Candide
    I Have Two Daddies

Here's an interesting link about banned books: Banned Books Online

Actually, it appears from the tone of your language that I might have hurt someone, against which you wrote this sentence as a stern warning or sort of it.
PS - As I am not a native user of King's language, I sometimes fail to understand the nuances. Is not it? Thanks, wonder Girl!

I think you were saying that you thought you offended someone by the way Wondergirl answered you. Not to worry, she answered your question and didn't seem to be hurt or offended.

Kahani, please don't think that anyone was upset by your question. Really, you didn't hurt anyone.

Since English isn't your first language, I think we may have misunderstood what you're asking, or what info you want.

This is an international site, and we welcome all newcomers. Please forgive any misunderstanding. :)

I'm not very familiar with books that have been banned, but there is one that I do know of, only because it made the news because there was such a controversy over it.

The book I'm talking about is OJ Simpsons book, titled "If I did it".

Apparently the book gave a hypothetical description of the murders of Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman, the two people OJ was accused of killing, but acquitted (found not guilty) of the crime.

From what I understand, the book was written, and scheduled to be released. In fact, OJ Simpson was going to promote the book by doing an interview. The interview was going to be titled "If I did it, here's how it happened".

The book was never released, and the rights to the book were awarded to the Goldman family.

I guess I can't really say that the book was completely banned. Once the rights were given to the Goldman family they added their own comments to the manuscript, changed the cover so that the "if" is barely noticeable, and also placed inside the "I" so that the book looks like it's titled "I did it".

The book was then released with the new info and title in 2007. The Goldman's receive all profits from the book, even though OJ Simpson wrote it.

Personally, I think that's fair. No matter how much money that book makes, it won't bring back Ronald Goldman.

Is that the kind of discussion you were looking for?

Yeah, sure, this type and everything. Actually I am a sort of bibliophile, but when I find the people busy in every type of work, but reading, I think that they are losing out something. Moreover, when I see that there are so many beautiful (I mean wornderful) books around, they must be read. No doubt, there are so many films, sites and scenes too, to be watched, or remain unwatched, but when I think of books, I really become emotional, and I think to motivate the people to read is to create some sort of curiosity.

An editor of a very very famous literary magazine asked me to write an analytical essay on Punjabi novel, but gave me the hints, saying that XYX is a good and interesting writer, but he is not realist. Moreover, he asked me to denounce many famous and well-read (those who are read by many and are popular, best-sellers) are criticised by him, as he do not like their thoughts. I think first you should bring the horse to the water, and then see the quality of the water. First it is important to attract the readers towards your work. There may be plenty of authors who write good, as he thinks, but they are not read, so what is the use of writing good, if no one reads you?

Such types of questions motivate me to make the people aware of popular, best-seller and controversial books, as this raises curiosity in the mind of the people, and they many become 'readers' one day. I want this world full of readers, who read and read and read and RELISH!

When you are on this skin, you must give a "yes, it helped" (reputation) to five other posters (I think it's five) before you can give one to me again. On the other skin, there is no limit.

Rather than post corrections on the open, public board, I will PM any corrections to you. Okay?

Do you like this "old" skin you are on now, or do you prefer the new one you were on first?

Yeah, I am enjoying/using the 'old' one, which is new to me, madam! I do not know whether (this I learnt from you, as earlier I used to use 'if') I am allowed to write my email id here, and if yeah, I will write it here, or you write yours, so that I can send my composition @your email id. What does PM mean?
