    Muscle weighs more than fat.

Which would you rather be? Muscular or fat?

There are several different systems (or methods) of weight lifting. Depending on which system you choose to follow, the results will vary.

If your primary concern is to loose excess weight by reducing body fat, then you'll have to take several factors into consideration.
[1] Your personal body type (endomorph, ectomorph, or mesomorph).
[2] Your diet. Eating regular meals consisting of healthy whole foods is best.
[3] Getting at least 8 hours of sleep per night regularly. The body's need for quality rest is way underestimated by most people. Getting sufficient sleep affects your entire health profile.
[4] Your overall general level of daily activity. Do you walk a number of miles per day ? Do you do any other regular sustained physical kind of work ? This is very important because it contributes to your overall consumption of food and output of caloric energy. If your lifestyle is very balanced (work, leisure, and rest), then you may not need any other physical exercise to help you lose weight.

However, if you find that you do wish to incorporate the use of some weight training into your regimen, I would recommend you start with at least one pair of 5 pound dumbells, and one pair of 10 pound dumbells. Then you could do simple squats, or you could do military presses. In general any increase in your level of activity will help you lose weight. As long as you don't also increase your intake of food.

    Short answer, yes.

Long answer, muscle burns energy even when it isn't really doing anything.
So if you take 2- 150 pound guys and have them both doing the same thing whether it be lounging and watching TV, building a house or running the mile. The one with the greater muscle mass will be burning more energy while doing it which means more weight loss.

But this is only to the point where you start gaining more muscle than you are losing in fat, but either way, that is still a good thing. I personally have dropped 43 pounds in the past year mainly by lifting weights and putting on muscles and running in my spare time (once or twice a week for about 2.5 miles)
